ONE DAY OPPORTUNITIES

  • BIKE RODEO
    Coordinators: Franconia Police Department (Faculty Coordinator)
    Tanya Yoder and Jen Harrison (Parent Coordinators)
    Help is needed the evening before the event for bike drop off. Help is also needed the day of the event in the morning moving the bikes out of the cafeteria into the lawn and during the event judging the participants, the scoring table and the water station. After the event, help is needed during bike pickup.

  • FIELD DAY – MAY 22nd (Rain Date May 23rd)
    Coordinators: Lainie Yerk and Julie Zettlemoyer
    Many volunteers are needed on the day of the event to assist with running the games, replenishing water bottles and providing the end-of-the-day treats.
    Coordinator: The Field Day coordinators are responsible for compiling a list of volunteers, provide the list of volunteers to the Physical Education teacher who will assign the volunteers to specific activities, help set up and cleanup the day of the event, and order and distribute a treat to the students at the conclusion of the event. They are also responsible for fundraising for and purchasing the field day t-shirts given to each student.

  • HOLIDAY COOKIE BAKE
    Coordinator: Kathleen Neely and Danielle Massina
    The Holiday Cookie Bake is a Christmas gift the Home & School gives to the teachers and staff at WBS. Volunteers are needed to bake 3 dozen cookies. Helpers are also needed to put the cookie plates together and distribute them. The Holiday Cookie Bake takes place in early December.

  • SPECIAL PERSON’S DAY - May 5th
    Coordinators: Maria Hall and Kim Austin
    The school organizes a special day for grandparents or family friends to visit our school and to participate in some entertaining programs that the teachers and students have planned for them. Volunteers will be needed during school hours to greet and register the visitors, direct them to the appropriate classroom, and staff the refreshment table. Volunteers are also needed to bake and supply refreshments for this special day.

  • WALK YOUR CHILDREN TO SCHOOL – October 3rd
    Coordinators: Kelly Murphy and Stephanie Cross
    Volunteers are needed to help make signs after school on October 2nd. On October 3rd we will need help transporting staff and teachers to the Univest building, help with passing out a light refreshment as the group arrives at school and helping by being enthusiastic walkers as we walk. Coordinator: The coordinator is in charge of organizing, publicizing and beginning the walk to school and making sure it coincides with the international walk to school day.

AT HOME OPPORTUNITIES

  • BOOK POCKETS
    Coordinator: Sharon Radcliff
    Volunteers are needed to help sew book pockets over the summer for the 1st grade classrooms. Help is also needed at the beginning of school to assist the children stencil their name on the pocket. Coordinator: Contact the 1st grade teachers in May/June to get the material patterns. Contact the sewers and distribute the materials to them.

  • BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION
    Coordinators: Maria Barr and Jen Harrison
    General Mills generously gives our school money in exchange for box tops from selected GM products. This program provides supplemental funding for activities sponsored by the HSA. Volunteers might be needed at various times throughout the year to trim, bundle, and count the box tops. A volunteer is also needed to get prizes for the monthly drawings. Coordinator: The coordinator is responsible for registering the school with General Mills, advertising the details of the program to the WBS community, designing programs to promote participation, providing updates to the school newsletter, and processing the necessary paperwork with General Mills.

  • CAMPBELL SOUP LABELS
    Coordinators: Jen Harrison and Diane Knechel
    The Campbell Soup Company awards points to our school in exchange for labels from certain products. The Home & School Association uses the points to obtain classroom equipment for the school. Volunteers might be needed at various times throughout the year to trim, bundle, and count the labels. Coordinator: The coordinator is responsible for communicating the details of the program to the WBS community and for sending the paperwork and labels to the Campbell Soup Company.

  • COURTESY CALLERS
    Coordinator: Beth Goshow
    This is one vital volunteer function that is ideally suited to parents who are home during the day. In the event that there is an emergency closing in the middle of the school day, these volunteers will call the people designated on the Early Dismissal Forms to inform them of the unexpected closing.

  • PAW PRINTS
    Editor-in-Chief: April Kenworthy Layout: Kim Austin
    Paw Prints is a bimonthly newsletter for the WBS community that contains recaps of classroom and school activities, reminders of upcoming events and important dates, feature articles about people involved with WBS, reports from the Home & School Association, and the Principal's Corner. We need a few polished writers to contribute articles on a regular basis. Coordinator: The Paw Prints coordinator (editor) is responsible for creating a schedule, gathering information and passing it on to the layout person. Strong organizational skills are required, as well as access to a computer.

  • SCHOOL DIRECTORY
    Coordinators: TBD
    The school directory is put together every year of all the students and parents at WBS who would like to participate. Volunteers are needed to help bind the directories. Coordinator: The coordinator sends out parent request for information sheets, collects information and creates directory, sends completed directory to copy center, binds and distributes directories, and coordinates the volunteers to help with these activities. Good computer skills needed.

ONGOING OPPORTUNITIES

  • ARTISTS IN ACTION
    Coordinator: Patricia Lembo
    Artists in Action brings working artists into all each building of SASD for assemblies and workshops. Volunteers give input on selection of musicians, dance troupes, drama groups or visual artists. Volunteers also assist with hands-on workshops. We usually meet the first Wednesday of the month from 9:00-10:30a.m. at the Indian Valley Public Library.

  • CHILD CARE
    Coordinator: TBA
    There are a few meetings held at the school for which childcare is provided free of charge to help alleviate the conflict many parents feel between wanting to participate and needing to care for their children at home. For these occasions, we need adult volunteers and will pay teenagers (ages 13-17) $5/hour to provide responsible supervision and recreation at the school to children up to 12 years of age.

    • Home & School Association Meetings: Providers needed from 6:45p.m. until approximately 8:30p.m. the second Tuesday of each month
    • Market Day Pick-up Nights: Providers needed from 5:15p.m. until approximately 7:45p.m. on the scheduled pick-up dates.

  • "DARE" DRUG ABUSE RESISTANCE EDUCATION
    Coordinators: Lainie Yerk and Ruth Moyer along with Franconia Police Dept.
    We will be assisting Officer Boyle in any fundraising events held throughout the year for this program. We will also be involved with the fourth grade graduation ceremony held at Indian Crest. Our volunteers will help Officer Boyle with any other need he might have. Volunteers of this committee are typically parents of fourth grade students.

  • FAMILY NIGHTS
    Coordinators: Kim Austin and Connie Kwiatkowski
    Volunteers are needed the night of the events to help serve food and beverages, direct families to various activities, and set up and clean up. The dates for the family nights are October 5th, November 2nd, and February 1st, from 7:00-8:30p.m.

  • FIELD DAY - Pretzel Day Fundraisers
    Coordinators: Lainie Yerk and Julie Zettlemoyer
    Pretzel sales are held various times throughout the year to raise money for the field day t-shirts given to all students. If you would like to help sort/bag and distribute pretzels please mark Pretzels in the "How I want to help column" next to Field Day on the back of the volunteer application form (use the PDF link at the top of this Web page to download the form).

  • FIFTH GRADE GRADUATION/SOCIAL COMMITTEE
    Coordinating Parents: Jen Harrison, Steph Steinly, Tanya Yoder, Kelly Wimmer and Kelly Murphy
    Volunteers of this committee are typically parents of fifth grade students. Parent volunteers work with the fifth grade teachers in planning, organizing, and preparing for the graduation celebration scheduled for June 5th. Volunteers meet and work throughout the year to organize any necessary fund-raising activities and to plan a festive, meaningful, and memorable event for the fifth grade graduates and their families.

  • HEALTH ROOM HELPER
    Coordinators: Mrs. Stanzian (School Nurse)
    The school nurse operates the "Safe Check" program at WBS to insure that every child has arrived safety to school each day. Parent/guardians are supposed to inform the school by 9:00a.m. if a child will be absent or tardy that day. If such a call is not placed to the school in advance of a student being marked absent, the health room volunteers will call the parents/guardians to confirm the safety and absence or tardiness of the student. Volunteers are needed in the nurse's office between 9:00a.m. and 10:00a.m. Monday thru Friday to place these "safe check" phone calls. The volunteers will need to be available on a regular basis throughout the school year. Maintaining confidentiality is a vital component of this work.

  • HOLIDAY GIFT SHOP
    Coordinators: Natalie Barsky, Kathleen Neely and Danielle Massina
    This event is sponsored by the Home & School Association and is intended to provide the WBS students with an opportunity to purchase (at cost) inexpensive gifts to surprise their relatives during the holiday season. A day or two before the event, volunteers are needed to price, sort, and box-up the inventory, and to set-up the displays. Additional volunteers are needed in school during the two-day sale to assist the children in making their selections, to restock the items, to serve as cashiers, and to personalize some of the gifts with calligraphy or creative lettering. This year Holiday Gift Shop is scheduled for Thursday, December 6th and Friday, December 7th. Coordinators: Due to the size of the event, we need several coordinators to help organize it. Coordinators develop a schedule of the gift shop staffing, assemble shopping teams, develop pricing, and manage the setup and clean up of the event.

  • HOME ROOM AND SPECIALS HELPERS
    Coordinators: Classroom & Special Faculty
    In volunteering as a helper for a Homeroom or Special, you need to know that each faculty member has the prerogative to use or not to use volunteers, and that each of the teachers have unique preferences for how often and in what ways they will use volunteers in or out of the classroom. There is also the possibility in some classrooms, particularly K-3, that far more parents will volunteer their services than there are services to perform. Therefore, it is important for you to understand that there is no guarantee that you will be asked to serve the function(s) for the classroom(s) or Special(s) that you designate on your volunteer information form.

    • Administrative/Clerical Assistance: cutting-out/posting pictures, photocopying and preparing bulletin boards etc. ** some clerical tasks can be done at home
    • Instructional/Tutorial Assistance: reading to students, assisting students with writing and editing stories, etc.
    • Occasional: Chaperoning field trips, assisting with class socials etc. Please specify on the information form the specific function(s) you want to perform and for which classroom(s). You may also indicate your willingness to do a variety of duties by entering "general clerical" and/or "general instructional" on the information form.

  • HOSPITALITY
    Coordinator: Monika Brown
    Volunteers are needed at various times throughout the school year to provide refreshments for activities sponsored by the Home & School Association, including our regular monthly meetings, and Family Nights. Volunteers may be called upon to help prepare or purchase the food and beverages, and/or clean-up after the event. Coordinator: The coordinators contact and organize the volunteers, plan the quantity & types of refreshments appropriate for the occasion, set-up the refreshment table, and oversee the cleanup.

  • LIBRARY ASSISTANTS
    Coordinator: Mrs. Koert (Librarian)
    Volunteers are needed to assist the librarian in tasks such as cataloging and shelving the books, in helping students select and check-out the library books, and in helping setting-up/taking down displays during normal school hours and on a regular basis throughout the year.

  • MISCELLANEOUS HELP
    Volunteers may be needed on a short notice basis for miscellaneous items and jobs. The miscellaneous help volunteers should be flexible and willing to do a lot of different tasks.

  • NEW PARENTS COMMITTEE
    Coordinators: Elizabeth Garvin, Beth Goshow and Kelly Murphy
    The committee members are available to dispense information to the new WBS parents during kindergarten registration scheduled for February 6th at 9:30am and the WBS open house scheduled for April 24th. In August, the committee hosts an open house for children who will be new to WBS in September.

  • POWER READING TUTORS
    Coordinators: Mrs. Babich - C.A.R.S Teacher Gwen Diamond - Parent Coordinator
    Tutors are needed to meet with children on an individual basis to practice reading and comprehension skills. The coordinator will work to match volunteer and student schedules. This is an ongoing weekly commitment. Volunteers will not be contacted until late October.

  • READING INCENTIVES
    Coordinators: Kelly Murphy and Sue Hanson
    The Reading Incentive committee will facilitate family reading events throughout the year. These can include, but are not limited to Moms & Muffins, Dads & Donuts and reading events at area bookstores. Volunteers will serve as welcoming committees, refreshment providers and time watchers. They may also be called upon to assist teachers and staff at bookstore events.

  • READING IS FUNDAMENTAL (R.I.F.)
    Coordinators: Ms. Heary (Faculty Coordinator)
    R.I.F is a federal program that is co-funded by the Home & School Association. The program encourages reading by providing every student at WBS with the opportunity to select a free book several times a school year. Volunteers are needed in the school during the R.I.F. distributions to set-up and dismantle the displays, to restock the books between classroom visits.

  • STAFF RECOGNITION/GIFTS
    Coordinators: Jennifer Ruggiero and Chris Donato
    The coordinator of this committee is responsible for purchasing gifts for staff recognition, secretaries' day, and the teacher appreciation lunch in the spring and other special occasions. Depending on the types of gifts purchased, volunteers may be needed to help put the gifts together.

  • SUNDAE BAR
    Coordinators: Lori Moyer and Lainie Yerk
    Sundae Bars are scheduled periodically throughout the year on the lunch menu calendars. Sundae Bar volunteers need to be available from 10:30-1:00 to help serve ice cream and toppings to the children during their lunch period in the cafeteria. Coordinator: The coordinator works with the cafeteria staff and schedule volunteers to help the Sundae Bar run smoothly.

FUNDRAISING
Coordinator: Kathleen Neely
The Home & School Association has one major fund-raiser each year to finance the many activities, events, and programs that we sponsor and support throughout the school year. Volunteers are needed throughout the year to help in planning events and support the efforts and events of the Home and School. Coordinator: The coordinator is responsible for choosing and coordinating fundraisers for the school year, circulating the information and forms to the students. New ideas are welcomed and discussed with the committee.

  • MARKET DAY
    Coordinators: Julie Zettlemoyer and Kim Austin
    Market Day is a supplemental source of income for the Home & School Association that occurs each month from September to June. A variety of top quality frozen foods can be purchased on the Internet, over the phone, or with standard order forms that are sent home with the students. Delivery of the merchandise usually occurs on the second Wednesday each month and must be picked-up by the customers that evening. On delivery day's volunteers are needed at the school between 5:30 and 6:30 PM to unload the truck and between 6:30 and 7:30 PM for checking the customer's orders during pickup. The delivery dates are scheduled for 9/12/07, 10/10/07, 11/7/07, 12/12/07, 1/23/08, 2/20/08, 3/26/08, 4/23/08, 5/21/08, and 6/18/08. Coordinator: The coordinators schedule the orders and deliveries, distribute the order forms, work with the Market Day representative to keep customers satisfied, recruit the volunteers, and organize their efforts.

  • SPIRIT WEAR SALE
    Coordinators: Sara Hyer and Lisa Blankenstein
    The Home & School Association sponsors a twice-a-year sale (at cost) of T-shirts, shorts, sweat pants and sweat shirts that are imprinted with a WBS School logo. Volunteers may need to help package and distribute the merchandise to the customers. Coordinator: The coordinator helps to select or design the logo, choose the vendor, and process the order forms and payments.
